2022 Studio News
On Sunday 20 November we held our Final Open Studio Day, attracting a steady flow of new and old art lovers who came to talk and learn about our art, to buy and commission art work. While this has been a bitter sweet experience, we are looking forward to a change after 23 years in one place. The City of Vincent made the creative decision not to proceed with the renovation of our studio building and instead offered us a larger and better condition building in North Perth. We thank the Mayor, City Councillors and staff for facilitating the move and undertaking renovations to make an ideal space for art making, community classes, workshops and exhibitions. We anticipate moving in February 2023 ... Signup for an invite to our 2023 exhibition at our new Farmer Street Studio in North Perth. Carol Rowling
This year has been a rather quiet for me with regards to exhibitions and with COVID still lurking about, but it has given me the opportunity to explore techniques using Acrylic paints and combining them with soil collected from the Pilbara regions which I have collected in the past when travelling with “The Collage group” a group of artists that I studied with many years ago. At present I am woking on 2 commissions and enjoying the challenge. Whilst the move to our new premises in January will be very exciting, especially with the added space and ample parking I will miss the park and those beautiful Moreton Bay trees. It has been a joy to have our coffee breaks sitting under their leafy canopy. www.carolrowling.com.au @CarolRowlingArtist |

Much of 2022 was spent on a commission with two large and two smaller works selected by the happy client. This furthered the spiral theme which emerged during my 2021 Minderoo Station residency. After so many decades of multiple super thin based works, it was both enjoyable and challenging hand building hollow forms in terracotta paper clay , particularly when one large work became 5mm too big for the large kiln! I explored the ideas behind the smaller, solid ceramic porcelain work in a JAC article while reflecting on the importance of form in my work. In February I gave a talk to the Art Gallery of WA Guides and in March ran my first raku workshop. In May I provided an hour long video workshop plus question and answer season (both still online) for the international Ceramics Congress. For the July Australian Ceramics Triennale I led a weekend masterclass, demonstrated for two afternoons and wrote a short JAC article. Each week for July to October I worked with arts students at La Salle College. Then in August and October I gave two workshops for the Canning Arts Centre. 2023 invitations include an exhibition (& masterclass) in India and workshops in 3 Australian states. www.grahamhay.com.au @GrahamHayArt |

This has been my 7th year as an artist at Robertson Park and while not quite as lucrative as previous years, it was enjoyable and probably a little more relaxed as I dropped my art teaching load to 2.5 days. The year began promisingly with several paintings being finalists in awards both in WA and interstate. This continued throughout the year and became the main medium for showing my art. Covid and other matters got in the way of my usual group or solo exhibitions, but I am in negotiation for a solo next year and, hopefully, we will put on another great studio exhibition at our new premises in 2023. The picture is of me and my finalist work in the Perth Royal Art Awards in October. As of writing, Cate, my wife and I, are about to head off for a long anticipated trip to Paris and 6 weeks of wonderful art, exhibitions and museums. www.christophermcclellandartist.com @christophermcclellandartist |
Frances Dennis
2022 has been a busy year in spite of the fact that Frances hasn’t exhibited outside the studio this year. She has had sound and satisfying results in the painting aspect of her art practice, working with a palette knife, cold wax and oil paint. With regard to ceramics, Frances continues making small figurative works in an ongoing wide-ranging project called Still Lives. Although this has been a consolidating year, working and only being seen within the studio environs, Frances is gratified to have made sales enough to keep on keeping on making. www.francesdennis.com @FrancesDennis |
Sarah Jane Marchant 2022 has been a rollercoaster year with very busy children to juggle as always amongst the continuing pandemic. Having to miss the last open studio at Rob Park due to sickness summed up a year of ups and downs. Despite the constant call of mum life, I have managed to take part in a number of Art Awards this year including Cossacks and City of Bayswater and made a number of sales along the way. I have been continuing my exploration of semi abstract work as well as my well known Boab pieces and have also recently started a limited edition run of Fine Art prints of my Bowerbird Series. Classes have been very busy and despite Covid causing havoc half way through the year we have gotten through and looking forward to the new teaching/making space in Farmer St in 2023. https://www.sarahjanemarchant.com @sarahjanemarchantartist/ |
