2021 Studio News
In February the Westcoast Community Centre group visited the studio and joined the artists in an engaging discussion about their creative practice.
On Sunday 19 September an Open Studio Day for the public was held at Studio, attracting a good crowd of new and old art lovers who came to chat, learn, buy, and discover more about this Artist Run Space.
After a series of public consultations, the City of Vincent has begun to redesign and renovate the Robertson Park, within which the studio sits. Both the artists and students commend the city for seeking public comment and then renewing our lease to at least the beginning of 2025 and included in its 2021/22 overall buildings maintenance budget to replace the 50-year-old lighting and heating, provide drop down power, general painting, repair the leaking roof and crumbling doors and frames.

Sarah Jane Marchant
Sarah has spent a large part of 2021 illustrating “My Awareness Book” for local author Diana Smith as well as producing two new covers for the first two books working with an art director in Melbourne as the series underwent a rebrand.
The latter part of the year has given Sarah some space to paint and is continuing to develop her abstract landscape series as well as completing commissions, and exhibiting and selling in art awards across WA and online at Bluethumb Art.
Painting Classes have been continually busy this year despite the pandemic and next year Sarah will begin a fourth book in the “My Grateful Series”.
2021 has been a productive year for Chris. It was certainly a strong year for sales and commissions, particularly with regards to the Indian Ocean series. This series of paintings explores the wildness of the ocean as a metaphor for life and our times, pursuing the theme that something can be beautiful and terrible at the same time.
Towards the latter part of the year, Chris returned to working with figurative subjects, both with paint and with charcoal, and exhibited these successfully in a variety of group exhibitions and awards.
One highlight was being shortlisted as a finalist in the Maritime Art Award in Melbourne. Unfortunately, the painting never actually made it to the exhibition of this longstanding and prestigious award, as it turned into an online exhibition due to Covid shutdowns in Melbourne.
In January the last Opening for Particle & Wave, the international paper clay exhibition toured 4 US Museums, was a virtual forum between the public, artists, Curator and administrators.
In October Graham undertook a residency in the Pilbara developing the sculptural and technical potential of unfired clay. This project has been made possible with the support of the Minderoo Foundation Artist Fund.
On-demand workshops include: the Perth Studio Potters and a series for the Sister Project and Ellenbrook Arts cumulating in the women migrants' exhibition at the latter.
He will speak at and provide a Master Class at the July 2021 Australian Ceramics Triennale, in Alice Springs.
His popular studio-based community classes continue next year.
2021 saw a quieter year with regards to exhibitions, with only our studio open day
and a group Show “The Collage Group” held at Gallery 152 in the town of York W.A.
At present I am working on a series of Ocean studies from images collected on
Rottnest Island. I am enjoying working with the rich hues of turquoise and ultramarine plus a
myriad of hues in between that you see in the surrounding ocean.
I am looking forward to the new year expanding my ocean series and exploring
new avenues and techniques.
2021 has been a good year for sales and commissions in both painting and ceramics. While still painting landscapes, Frances has been adding to her elderly ceramic Franikins, that tribe who continue to take an enormous interest in their own lives and the lives of others. They do not ‘go gentle into that good night.’
Working in either paint or clay, memories are triggered, grabbed and stabilised. Working like this provides Frances with enough space to muse and hypothesise, for viewers to do likewise and perhaps even recognise.
