STUDIO OPEN DAY (Saturday 29 November 2003 10am -3pm)
STUDIO ARTISTS
Umberto Alfaro has just come back to earth after his last solo exhibition "Pulpitations II"in Nedlands showing more than 100 pieces. The preparation of "Pulpitations II" kept Umberto very busy for the past six months creating a big range of pieces with different shapes and colours from South American fish to Spanish Conquistadors; from colourful bowls to candelabra and so on.
Since being back in W.A. these last 12 months, Carol Rowling have been exhibiting in various art awards. Graham Hay and Carol received a Highly commended award for sculpture, one of the “Bethanies” in the Mindarie Art Awards. “I am enjoying being back in the studio and currently working on artworks for major art awards and commissions”, said Carol, “I finding the studio very inspiring and rewarding”:
Carol received a commission from the Developers, Fini Mirvac. It was for a series of artworks to hang in approx.150 apartments in their resort villas at Bunker Bay near Yallingup. This meant producing 4 works which they then had digitally printed onto canvas. “It has been an exciting year with many fingers in different pies”. Website: www.carolrowling.com.au
Over the last 12 months Frances Dennis has been very busy making. She won the Town of Vincent Ceramic Sculpture Award 2002, exhibited the sculptures at the Rob pART II exhibition and continues to refine the technical and conceptual aspects of the Franikin Mob Project. Frances has just returned stimulated and motivated after travelling to Denmark, to work as Michael Hall's assistant at the Kulturhaus in Arhus, and to Northern England to investigate the history and observe the diversity of sculptural form and practices. Graham Hay accepted invitations to give workshops in the north (Geraldton), south (Mandurah and Esperance), and the east (Canberra and Bendigo (National Ceramics Conference)) as well as many in Perth. This year saw the last exhibition together by the Thermal Shock ceramic group he setup in 1992, at the Gallows Gallery. Despite these distractions Graham’s studio pottery and sculpture classes have continued strongly this year. The loan by one student, Trisha Crabtree, of a kiln to the studio, has meant that smaller works can now be fired on site. A big thanks Trisha! Currently Graham has the paper flying as he cuts into tonnes of donated annual reports as he develops a series of outdoor compressed paper sculptures. Next year… an invitation to host the first international paperclay symposium in Hungary, demonstrate at the National Australian Fibre Forum and possible workshops in the UWA Summer School, in Brisbane and elsewhere are already tempting in the wings. Between work and family Paul Carstairs continues to find time in the studio, and is currently working on a number of collaborative projects.

LAST YEAR IN THE STUDIO
The studio had its biannual exhibition in October 2002. The studio was cleaned out and exhibition lighting and temporary walls installed. The Opening was a fantastic night for the over 600 people, with fine wine, food and Latin-American music provided by generous sponsors. Despite many inner-city artist studio closures, the Studio has survived and celebrated its 10th year in Northbridge. Thanks in part goes to the Town of Vincent that leases the space to the artist group and Mayor of Vincent, Nick Catania for opening the exhibition. We particularly appreciated the support of local businesses and individuals who get behind the Studio's exhibitions. Companies like Masterplanners Interiors, Rayner & Associates, Daniels Printing Craftsmen and Granny's Pies & Cakes. A unique feature of exhibitions at the Studio is that the entire local community receives an invitation to the opening night, as a thank you for its continued support of the space. As Rosie Reeman of Masterplanners Interiors Pty Ltd stated, "we support the Artist's Studio because of the important contribution it makes to the community." On 29 November 2003 the studio held another Open Day for the local community and artists. Further details on the studio, classes, including a map click here.
