MEDIA RELEASE
INTERNATIONAL ARTISTS EXHIBITING LOCALLY
Experience Robertson Park from an ART point of view
Artists’ run consortium, the Robertson Park Artists Studio in Northbridge will open their doors with a line-up of art and ‘art in progress’ during the Artopia Festival.
Open to the public from Saturday 22 September until 30th September 2007, the Robertson Park Art Studio will host a working exhibition in the Robertson Park Artists Studio, southern half of Robertson Park, nearest corner Fitzgerald & Cowle Street, Perth.
You are invited to visit and watch as artists, Umberto Alfaro; Robyn Camerer; Frances Dennis; Renae Geddes; Susanne Hamlin-Sullivan; Graham Hay; and Lauren Wilhelm at work in the studio. Whilst Carol Rowling is currently in NSW, some of her wonderfully tactile paintings will be on display. New and ‘in-progress’ artworks comprising: ceramics; paintings; compressed paper and papier-mâché sculpture; and installation art will be on show in the working studio exhibition.
The Robertson Park Artists Studio is the base for nine artists and craftspeople. Community classes are held for local people and a wider community of people interested in and supportive of the arts.
Graham Hay sculpts ceramic paperclay or compressed paper into organic forms. This year Graham has been invited to exhibit and/or teach in the US and Canada, Norway, New Zealand, Queensland (x2), Sydney, and Turkey. Between these activities he conducts community pottery and sculpture classes in the studio.
Susanne Hamlin-Sullivan (Sushi) paintings are inspired by the shadows, architectural shapes, and nature. Sushi most recently won the “Best Oil/Acrylic” at the City of Stirling Art Awards and is currently undertaking BFA (Honours) at UWA.
Lauren Wilhelm cites her studies in Budapest, courtesy of a scholarship from the Hungarian Government, as a major influence in her work. Her paintings carry a offer an emotive and lively interaction of colours, arousing further contemplation from the viewer. Lauren has just returned to the studio from exhibitions in New York and Sydney.
Robyn Camerer completed her BA Visual Arts degree at ECU last year. She paints on canvas using acrylic and oil mediums. Her interest in using the interplay of colour, rhythm and movement dominates her work. Favourite sources for expressing this come from the visual drama of the human form.
Frances Dennis’ images, which are not exact re-presentations of natural or synthetic forms, construct a new world of images that can be suggestive of already existing ones, thus inviting reflection and contemplation. “My artwork is the creative outcome of a fundamental belief that what counts most in life is a sense of continuity and belonging.”
Chilean Umberto Alfaro uses Papier-Mâché to illustrate how he sees the park and its plants. Umberto has recently held his successful fourth solo exhibition “Palpitations IV” in the Perth Arts Centre. He also runs classes in the art of Papier-Mâché and Spanish.
Renae Geddes works part time as a Graphic Designer and likes to utilise the computer when creating compositions in the design process; which consist mainly of oils but sometimes mixed media. Her work is often bold and vibrant and always complete with texture.
Carol Rowling’s paintings are built up with layers of mixed media, inspired by the remote and urban Australian landscape. Originally trained at the Carine and Claremont School of Art she has developed unique methods of building up the surface of her images to introduce a degree of randomness in the colours. Carol spends her time equally between the West and East Coasts of Australia, in Perth and Sydney.
