2002 ROBERTSON PARK ARTISTS STUDIO NEWS

ARRIVALS/DEPARTURES

Carol Rowling moved to Sydney for 18 months and is busy painting and exhibiting. Just prior to her departure, she and Graham Hay collaborated on a number of sculptures, one of which won the 2001 City of Wanneroo Sculpture Award.

At the end of 2001Victoria Nadas/Jones and family transferred to Melbourne permanently and have been busy settling in. Victoria has already been awarded, and begun, a painting commission.

Ex-Robertson Park/Wellman Street artist Diokno Pasilan and partner Ruth have delayed their return to Perth from the Philippines due to the arrival of their adopted new born son baby Pintado. Ruth emailed pictures of the three of them just before Christmas.

Alex Hayes, also ex-Wellman Studio, created an innovative web/print exhibition, whereby professional artists (including Graham Hay) donated images which were placed on the web and then downloaded manipulated by other artists (including Carol Rowling and Frances Dennis) and returned to Alex as "new" prints. See http://www.users.bigpond.com/printonline for details.

Those interesting in maintaining contact with ex-studio artists or students, please ring or email Graham Hay for contact details.

Newest studio artists are Latin American papier-mâché Artist Umberto Alfaro, mural painter Anne-Maree Pelusey and painter Paul Carstairs.

EXHIBITIONS

Early in 2001, studio artists Carol Rowling, Victoria Nadas and Graham Hay held a successful exhibition at the intimate Exhibitionist Gallery, Blake Street, Mount Lawley. The exhibition was kindly sponsored by local firms Blake's café and Mark Rayner and Associates.

Also during 2001, Graham exhibited ceramics in Wales and paper sculpture at the Craft Council in London. He also gave a paperclay demonstration in front of an audience of 800 in Wales and presented papers at a Symposium in London and a conference in Queensland. This year he has already been invited to exhibit at the Holland Paper Biennial at the Museum Rijswijk, the Red Hot Fibre exhibition at the Redcliffe City Art Gallery (NSW) and the Sydney Teapot exhibition at the Inner City Clayworkers Gallery.

STUDIO OPEN DAY

With Victoria's pending departure it was felt that a large studio exhibition would be too rushed. Therefore a very relaxed and successful Open Day was held in October 2001 which attracted over 200 local people. It was advertised in the weekend "West" and photocopy invites were placed in letterboxes in the surrounding streets. It provided a great opportunity for those wondering what was going on in "that Hall in the Park" and for other artists to drop by for a cuppa and yarn.

Just prior to the Open Day the Town of Vincent painted the whole building in lighter colours selected by us, making it an even more pleasant environment for learning about and creating art. We also added a large orange "ART" sign on the front window.

OTHER NEWS

Frances Dennis participated in our 2001 Open Day and is currently concentrating on building up a body of work for exhibition. She has also been invited to give a talk on sculpture and its relationship to the 2D at the Watercolour Society in February this year.

Umberto Alfaro has been invited to demonstrate his papier-mâché techniques at the Tresillian Centre, Nedlands and is about to start papier-mâché classes in our studio.

Graham Hay, in conjunction with ex-Wellman Street artist Alex Hayes and artist Peter Zappa have just completed the design for a $60,000 public art project for the south end of Oxford Street, Leederville. Graham has also just been invited to demonstrate at the National Ceramics Conference in Bendigo next year.

CLASSES

The Community Classes in the studio continue this year. Unlike tafe and other classes, you may start at any time by simply contacting the artists directly. There is free parking/tea/coffee and each week you can see interesting art being created by the other friendly studio artists.

FORTHCOMING STUDIO EXHIBITION

With a full house of artists again, we are planning a Studio Exhibition for October this year. Some of you were part of the 600 people at the first studio exhibition opening two years ago and will remember the great art, food, wine and entertainment at that event. The generous support of our sponsors Australind, Touchstone Colour printing, City Fresh food, Beilby Design and Techwrite International meant that the presentation was perfect and the food and wine, also excellent, did not run out til late. Until we have approached sponsors, we can't guarantee the same scale this year, but we encourage you to pencil this event in your diary for the evening of the 11 October.
